How are there so many cults?

I went on a true crime spree a few months ago and truly there are thousands of these things, across all belief systems, regions, education levels, socioeconomic backgrounds, gender. Why are so many people drawn in by cults?

Also me: Omg the world is so complicated I wish things were easier if only there was someone to tell me what to do at all times. Certainty and community and purpose would be so nice right about now, where does one find those things.
